REPORT ON THE WORKSHOP ATTENDED ON 22-4-22

The Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration in collaboration with NGO- Yuvsatta, launched a 45 days- ‘ Plastic Pollution Free Chandigarh ‘ campaign from World Earth Day – April 22nd to World Environment Day – June 5th.

On the 22nd the programme started with a walk in the Chandigarh Bird Park, adjoining Sukhna Lake. Two students – Swacchta Ambassadors – Mohan Dalal and Jeena M. George along with their Eco Club teacher Mrs Nirmala James attended the orientation workshop at Carmel Convent School, Chandigarh, after the walk through the Bird Park.

All  three of us were welcomed with a badge, poster and a cloth bag. This was followed by speeches from Ms. Meenakshi – Assistant Environment Engineer, Mr Pramod – Yuvsatta and Mr Debendra Dalai – Chief Conservator of Forests. Many documentary movies were shown to impact of plastic pollution not only on our planet but also on plants and animals, not to forget human beings.

All the representatives from different schools were asked to team up and plan out a programme to combat the plastic pollution. Our school paired up with GMSSS 16D and chalked out a plan to

  1. Construct a peaceroom using bricks made from Eco – bricks ( plastic bottles filled with plastic bags,  approximately 14 bags in one bottle).
  2. Make decorative planters – from plastic bottles.
  3. Dustbins to be made with Eco- bricks.
  4. Ban the use of straws.
  5. Reuse textbooks –  pass the textbooks after completion of an academic year to your juniors.
  6. Make rough books – collect all unused pages from the notebooks and make rough books.
  7. Organise awareness drives – harmful affects of plastic pollution.
